It arises with the idea of expanding research opportunities in Costa Rica and has been extended to other countries in the area. Alpha-Cen has initiated collaborative ties with the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) in the United States, initiating projects to work on the development of astronomical sciences in the region.
